Big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence are revolutionizing numerous fields, and physics is no exception. In this talk, I will introduce a neural-network-based approach to automatically classify crystal structures by their symmetry; interestingly, this model uses the same landmarks a physicist would use, although never explicitly instructed to do so. Finally, I will show how similar techniques have previously been used with everyday life examples
