Abstract
Networks in Science and Technology: an Economic Perspective
A substantial body of economic literature has recently been concerned with the structure and dynamics of networks in science and technology. Despite the growing interest in this filed, relatively little emphasis has been placed on two broad areas of investigation: on the one hand, the interplay of different levels of analysis: Micro (individual agent a/o scientific institution) and Macro (aggregations such as regions/nations/industries); on the other hand the implications that the structure and dynamics of these networks have on knowledge creation and diffusion. The speech intends to present, to a non-economists audience, some recent developments of the economic literature on scientific and technological networks and discuss strength and weaknesses of such an approach.
